Samsung BrightView LTN. Samsung is a Korean multinational conglomerate. It is one of the world’s largest consumer electronics companies. Samsung is the world’s largest television producer with more than 50% of the world’s flat panel television market and is also the world’s largest display manufacturer. Samsung controls 20.2% of the worldwide LCD monitor market. Smartphone manufacturing takes up some 40% of the company’s global revenues, and the company has four out of the top five mobile phone brands in the world. Samsung Group also includes semiconductor and enterprise software businesses. Samsung was founded in 1938 by Kim Un-seok, but this was not a family-owned business. Founded as a state-owned enterprise, Samsung was privatized in 1987. At this time, the company focused on electronics and information technologies, starting with semiconductor-based devices. Samsung’s television-based business, later expanded to other consumer products, became profitable. In 2007, Samsung reorganized its business into four divisions: mobile phones, home appliances, semiconductors, and LCD monitors. Samsung has recently purchased or closed more than 50 of its subsidiaries, and many operations of these have been moved to Samsung Electronics subsidiaries in South Korea and overseas. This has led to an increasing degree of control by Samsung over its former subsidiaries. Samsung was founded by Korean businessman Kim Un-seok (1918–1998) in 1938. Samsung traces its roots to 1938 when Kim Un-seok started trading as a grocer in Busan, South Korea. In 1939, Kim purchased his first electronic components business in order to begin manufacturing televisions. In 1946, he purchased a second business. By the time of his death in 1998, he had become one of South Korea’s wealthiest people. His son, Lee Kun-hee, was named chairman of Samsung Group in 1977. A member of the Lee family is still chairman of Samsung, which is listed on the Korea Stock Exchange. In 1974, the government of South Korea nationalized all manufacturing companies under South Korean control. After much political struggle, Samsung was excluded from the nationalization, and several of its subsidiaries, like Samsung Medical Center and Samsung Life Insurance, remained under state control. Samsung Electronics, however, was fully privatized and turned into a holding company in 1987. Since 1987, the group has been a completely private company, with subsidiaries run independently by their respective boards of directors. In 2010, Samsung
